On Wednesday, Clymer Borough Council and residents heard from a representative with Rosebud mining about a proposed mine they wish to work near the borough.
Rosebud’s manager of permitting John St. Clair said that Rosebud is looking at an underground coal mine in the Brookville Coal Seam located in Cherryhill Township and about 3000 feet away from the borough, but they are going to use a room and pillar mining system, which will prevent subsidence.
Another concern that was brought up was water quality. St. Clair said that they are gathering information about water supplies at this point, both private and public.
This is still in the early phases as the process could take as little as five years to go through before the mine would be open for business. The mine would replace the Heilwood mine, which may close between five to ten years. Borough Manager Sonya Schrenkel said that the presentation was given last night in response to letters Rosebud sent to borough residents concerning water supplies. Residents with questions are asked to contact Rosebud Mining directly at 724-545-6222.
