State Senator Joe Pittman has issued a statement in reaction to the Third Circuit Court ruling concerning mail-in ballots.
A three-judge panel ruled on Wednesday that mailed ballots that arrive on time, but in envelopes without dates written in by the voters or with incorrect dates should not be counted. The 2-1 decision strikes down a lower-court ruling, but the matter can be appealed further. A current, handwritten date on the return envelope is required by Pennsylvania State Law, but the date is not used to confirm if a person is eligible to vote.
In his statement, Senator Pittman said this is a big step towards safeguarding elections in Pennsylvania. He says the move protects “the integrity of our electoral process” and will bring “clarity back for each of our 67 counties across the commonwealth. He added that protecting a citizen’s right to a free and fair elections process and restoring voter confidence in the process will continue to be key issues for PA Senate Republicans.
