Two major internet providers were recently awarded grant money from the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority to increase high-speed internet access in the 41st Senatorial District, and Indiana County will receive a portion of those funds.
Senator Joe Pittman announced on Thursday that Verizon and Comcast Cable were awarded $6.5 million in Broadband Infrastructure Program grant funds to increase internet speeds in Indiana, Jefferson and Westmoreland counties.
Additionally, Indiana County is one of three counties set to receive $34.7 million from Verizon to improve access parts in the area.
Pittman said in a news release that “we need to bridge the digital divides that exist in our commonwealth, especially those in rural areas, to ensure all Pennsylvanians can take advantage of many things broadband can deliver.” This comes after he cited how high-speed internet can help people better access basic amenities, like education and health care.
Grant funds must be used by December 31, 2026.
