With new first baseman Spencer Horwitz already out 6 to 8 weeks following wrist surgery, the Pirates plan to use internal options before looking at a trade or free agency to fill the gap. They’ve got experienced first basemen in camp, with Billy Cook, Darick Hall, Enmanuel Valdez, and JC Stewart. They also have Jared Triolo, who can play anywhere in the infield, and some minor league options.
Spring Training kicked off yesterday with pitchers and catchers having their first workout, although most of the position players are already in camp. Manager Derek Shelton says he has more talent in Bradenton than he’s ever had.
Bryan Reynolds has experimented with playing first base, but Shelton says Reynolds will focus on a different type of position switch.
Shelton is looking forward to the effect that veteran Tommy Pham will have on the team, with his bat and glove, and in the clubhouse.
