Hundreds of people came out Friday night to pay tribute to a fallen soldier from World War II who finally came home.
Pfc. John Walko died in 1944 in World War II while fighting in Germany, and while his remains were recovered, he went unidentified until last year, when the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced he was identified using DNA and Forensic evidence. After a solemn transfer ceremony at Pittsburgh International Airport, he was taken under escort from the Indiana County Sheriff’s office and later borough police and veteran-based motorcycle groups to the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home, who are handling all the funeral arrangements.
Many of those in attendance felt the event was historic and emotional.
Walko will be interred Wednesday with full military honors in Oakland Cemetery. You can find more on visitation and funeral services by clicking here.
