Week 10 of the high school football regular season brings with it plenty of playoff question marks, especially in Class A, where three Heritage Conference teams are vying for the last two playoff slots, and Homer-Center looks to lock up the second spot in the bracket.
On WCCS and Renda Digital TV, 7-2 Homer-Center looks to rebound from last week’s tough loss to Cambria Heights with a visit to 3-6 Portage.
Coach Greg Page says it’s important for his Wildcats to put last week’s loss to Cambria Heights behind them.
Page says Portage coach Marty Slanoc has his team playing well.
The Page family has roots in Portage. Greg Page’s parents are both from there and his father played for the very first Portage Mustangs team, back in the 1940s when the school district was formed from the Portage Borough and Portage Township schools.
The Mustangs’ Marty Slanoc says his young players are growing into an experienced football team.
Slanoc says his Mustangs have to guard against the Wildcats’ big-play offense, and then control the ball.
Slanoc says Homer-Center is a reflection of their coach.
On Cat Country 106.3 FM and Renda Digital TV, 7-2 River Valley travels to Duffy Daugherty Field to meet 4-5 Northern Cambria.
Panthers coach Ed Dalton says if Northern Cambria plays the way they can, they’re dangerous.
Colts coach Sam Shutty says they have to disrupt the rhythm of the Panthers’ offense.
On 92.5 FM U92, 6-3 Marion Center tackles 2-7 Penns Manor.
Stingers coach Adam Rising says the Comets’ passing game is challenging.
Comets coach Carson Rhea says the Stingers are talented and tough.
The other games in the Heritage Conference include 9-0 Cambria Heights hosting 3-6 West Shamokin, 3-6 Purchase Line at 2-7 United Valley, with the Dragons having a chance to pass Portage and Northern Cambria to get into the D6 Class A playoffs, and 7-2 Conemaugh Township at 0-9 Conemaugh Valley.
LAST NIGHT
Bentley Bainey ran for 182 yards and four touchdowns, threw for another TD, and returned an interception for a sixth TD of the night as Bishop McCort started the football weekend with a 42-22 win over Bellefonte. The win vaults the Crushers into second place in the Class A rankings, 100 points ahead of Homer-Center, which would retake the second slot for next week’s playoffs with a win over Portage tonight.
