The Pirates last night picked up a season-high fourth straight win, this time in the opener of a three-game set with the Marlins. Greg Brown has the recap.
In the second game of the series tonight, Mitch Keller [1-8, 4.13 ERA] gets the start for the Pirates. He’s not won since his first start of the year, against the Marlins in March. Miami counters with former Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcántara [2-7, 7.89 ERA], who has struggled in his return from Tommy John surgery. It’s a 6:15 airtime, 6:40 first pitch on WCCS.
Konnor Griffin has far exceeded even the lofty expectations that come with being the Pirates’ number one draft choice last year, and the Pirates have rewarded the shortstop/centerfielder by promoting the 19-year-old to High-A Greensboro. Griffin leads the Low-A Florida State League with a .338 batting average, and also leads the league in hits, runs, and slugging percentage. He’s tied for the lead in OPS and is second with nine home runs and 36 RBIs. He’s batting .520 in June.
