The Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers met last night in the annual “Spring Breakout” game 8-7. The story of the game came from the Pitching mound, as Seth Hernandez set the tone with his first pitch, a 102.4 mile an hour fastball that prompted teammates to question what they saw. Five of the first six pitches offered were above 100 miles an hour in his first ever game in front of a crowd since he was picked in the 2025 draft. All the Pirates runs came in the 3rd inning as they scored on a passed ball, an RBI single by Will Taylor, a bases loaded walk to Esmeryn Valdez, a grand slam homer by Tony Blanco, Jr. and a solo homer that followed by Easton Carmichael.
Meanwhile, the main roster lost to the Atlanta Braves 8-1. The Pirates only run came as Nick Yorke hit a sac-fly to score Jared Triolo in the top of the 2nd. Nick Dombkowski took the loss, giving up homer and three other runs on four hits, striking out three in four innings of work.
The Pirates will play Toronto this afternoon to kick off the firnal weekend of spring training baseball. We’ll have it for you at 1:00 this afternoon on WCCS.
