Nick Yorke entered Saturday’s game as a pinch runner for Marcell Ozuna, and his single in the bottom of the ninth, just beyond the outstretched glove of Orioles leftfielder Dylan Beavers scored Bryan Reynolds from second base to give the Pirates a 3-2 win.
Yorke’s hit came one pitch after what should have been a called third strike that was called a ball instead by home plate umpire Dan Iassogna. The Orioles had used all of their ABS challenges, however, so Iassogna’s call stood, giving Yorke another chance.
The Pirates had tied the game 2-2 in the eighth on a Jake Mangum grounder that was misplayed by O’s pitcher Anthony Nunez into an RBI single. Dennis Santana got the win for the Bucs after pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Reynolds had two hits for the Pirates.
The Pirates have won four in a row. The series finale is today at 1:35. Braxton Ashcraft (0-1, 3.00 ERA) pitches for the Pirates against the Orioles’ Chris Bassitt (0-1, 8.31 ERA).
The coverage on WCCS begins with The Pirates Insider Show with Jason Mackey at 12:35.
