The buses start rolling tomorrow as the school year begins for the United School District. That means Homer-Center will be the only school district not yet holding classes, but the district has decided to split its student body, with grades 7 to 12 beginning on Tuesday but younger students forced to wait a bit longer.
Homer-Center Superintendent Ralph Cecere has announced that elementary school students will not be starting school on Tuesday because of ongoing efforts to deal with the mold issues in the building. A two-day notice will be provided to parents when a start date is decided, with the district hoping for later this week.
Meanwhile, students at the Junior/Senior High School, including ICTC, will start on Tuesday, and school will be in session on Friday, which was previously planned as a vacation day heading into Labor Day weekend. If school does start for elementary students this week, they, too, will be in class on Friday.
Either way, the Homer-Center school board must eventually decide how to handle the separate schedules for the elementary and high school students. The board will hold a regularly-scheduled planning meeting on Thursday night.
Other school board meetings this week include United, with a work session on Tuesday at which applicants for the vacant Region 1 seat will be interviewed; and Penns Manor, which will hold a committee meeting on Wednesday.
