Today is the start of National School Bus Safety Week, and Blairsville Borough Police are joining other law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement efforts.
On Wednesday, October 21st, Blairsville police, State Police along with other agencies and PennDOT will take part in Operation Safe Stop. They remind everyone that the state’s school bus stopping law requires motorists to stop at least 10 feet away from the bus when its red lights are flashing and stop arm is activated. Motorists that are following or travelling alongside the bus must also stop until the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached safety. If physical barriers separating oncoming traffic are present, like grassy medians, guide rails or concrete barriers, motorists in oncoming lanes are allowed to proceed without stopping.
