He says he’ll be nervous, but 30-year-old Austin Lemieux will be excited as well when he tees off in his very first PGA Tour event today, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, on the PGA Fall Tour.
Mario Lemieux’s son played college hockey at Arizona State but left the ice to focus on golf. He maintains his amateur status but made the field at Bermuda, shooting a (very fitting) 66 at a qualifier in Florida on October 12th.
Lemieux says golf has similarities to hockey, but there are differences.
He will be playing his round today with his good friend and fellow Pittsburgher Neil Shipley. Lemieux last month won the Western Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur Championship with rounds of 66 and 67 at Fox Chapel Golf Club, nailing a hole-in-one in the first round. He also won a Minor League Tour event in Florida this month.
Adam Schenk is the defending champ at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton Parish, Bermuda.
