Applications are being accepted now for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program or LIHEAP.
It is a federally funded program that helps individuals and families pay heating bills through home heating energy assistance grants. Households can receive one grant between $200 and $1000 per LIHEAP Season. It also provides crisis grants to help in emergencies or if a resident is in danger of losing heat due to broken equipment, lack of fuel or termination of utility service. The minimum crisis grant is $25 and the maximum is $1,000. Households may apply and be eligible for more than one crisis grant if they experience more than one emergency per LIHEAP season.
Qualification for either grant is based on income requirements based on household size.
Those who want to apply for LIHEAP can do so by logging on to dhs.pa.gov/compass, contacting the county assistance office at 724-357-2900 or by calling LIHEAP at 1-866-857-7095. The program runs through April 23rd of next year.
