A former Steelers player and a current member of the Steelers Radio Network broadcast team announced yesterday he has ALS, also known as Lou Gherig’s Disease.
According to DK Pittsburgh Sports, the former Steelers Right Tackle made the diagnosis public in a video interview for The Bible Chapel, a non-denominational church with locations in the Pittsburgh area. The diagnosis first came to him after a visit to UPMC Presbyterian, and was confirmed in a visit to the Cleveland Clinic. Ilkin said he started to experience headaches and other physical discomfort as long as a year ago, and said that he has difficulty in the morning with his hands and arms being tired, but he feels more energy as the day goes on.
Ilkin says he will fight the disease, and will continue to work out, lift weights and walk.
