Indiana County’s District Attorney talked this morning about the officer-involved fatal shooting that happened about a month ago that was declared “justified” in an announcement he made yesterday.
DA Robert Manzi said that a trooper shot and killed John V. Dye after a chase came to an end in the early morning hours of July 3rd along Route 119 South near Homer City. Dye led police on a chase through residential areas of Center Township and went through yards and businesses before police initiated a rolling roadblock on 119. Once stopped, a trooper ordered Dye to step out of the car, but Dye backed the car into a police cruiser, pushing it back two car lengths and trapping the trooper, who then pulled his gun and shot Dye. Dye was declared dead at the scene. Manzi said the shooting was justified as the officer was protecting himself and other troopers that responded to the scene.
Manzi said the investigation was a thorough one, and that people posting stories on social media without knowing all the facts did more harm than good.
He added that the shooting will not only stay with the victim’s family, but with the officer for the rest of his life.
In the statement issued Wednesday, Manzi said no further action would be taken in the case.
